Deployment of carrier-grade systems within 12 months
Application: Application “switch” for interoperability across both telephony and Internet platforms
Challenge: A start-up company was developing a greenfield carrier-grade system for telecom service providers. The company needed to demonstrate its prototype system at a large trade show within four months of the project start, and it needed to have a field-deployable product within 12 months of the project start. The customer required a high-performance and highly scalable solution to address a variety of system capacity requirements.
Solution: Enea provided the following software solution: SA Forum Application Interface Specification (AIS) and Hardware Platform Interface (HPI) conformant middleware, embedded management (northbound interface), and DBMS. Specific SA Forum-based functionality included the Hardware Platform Interface, Availability Management Framework (AMF), Notification Service (NTF), and (pre-standard) Software Mangement Framework.
Enea’s partner provided the following hardware solution: AdvancedTCA platform: 1. 6 to 16 slots 2. Redundant 10 GigE switches 3. 2 to 4 control blades 4. 2 to 6 application blades 5. Up to 2 database blades.
Results: The solution met or exceeded all schedule goals with the demo alone being ready in three months. The selection of SA Forum middleware eliminated significant platform integration risks and reduced R&D NRE costs by a factor of greater than two.
Of particular importance in this success was the SA Forum Availability Management Framework support of multiple redundancy models: 2N and N-way Active in this case. The combination of AdvancedTCA and SA Forum middleware provided a truly scalable solution that met the customer’s business objectives. Future expansion plans include DSP and CPU-based AMC modules to provide integrated functionality such as voice-to-text, remote application mirroring and more.
