A Practical Guide to Implementing Open Standards-Based High Availability
A live Webinar event
March 22, 2007 2:00 p.m. (EDT)

Speakers: John Fryer (SA Forum), Dr. Asif Naseem (GoAhead Software, Inc.), and Bruce Anthony (IBM)

Moderator: Joe Pavlat

Telecom equipment manufacturers (TEMs), network equipment providers (NEPs) and service providers face rising demands to increase services, faster and with fewer resources. The Service Availability Forum has developed specifications for standardizing hardware access, through the Hardware Platform Interface (HPI) and for applications operating in a high-availability environment through the Application Interface Specification. GoAhead Software and IBM have teamed to create an integrated, application-ready platform for telecommunications based on Service Availability Forum AIS and HPI specifications and other open standard specifications. This session provided an introduction to HPI, the standard programmatic interface that enables management middleware applications to monitor and control platform hardware, as well as the steps taken to achieve an application ready platform. Highlights included comprehensive HA and platform management capabilities such as resource discovery and system model instantiation, shelf manager integration, alarm management, hot swap management and integration with IBM BladeCenter HT(r) management capabilities.

Attendees saw how this pre-integrated, pre-validated application ready platform based on Service Availability Forum standards is significantly increasing TEMs', NEPs' and telecommunications services providers' ability to increase availability of services quicker, reduce costs, and focus on differentiation.

LUNCHEON KEYNOTE ~ 12:15 PM
Presented by Dr. Asif Naseem with GoAhead Software, SA Forum President for 2007

AdvancedTCA to Service Availability Forum Middleware – What Does it all Mean?
The proliferation of industry-developed specifications is apparent. With more than 100 companies participating, AdvancedTCA is the largest specification effort in PICMG's history. AdvancedTCA is targeted to requirements for the next generation of carrier grade communications equipment. On the other end of the communications platform spectrum, the Service Availability Forum is developing high availability interface specifications, notably the Hardware Platform Interface (HPI) and the Application Interface Specification (AIS).

This keynote gave an overview of today’s standards ecosystem and what it means to you. Specifically utilizing specifications to dramatically save developers time, money and resources. Dr. Naseem addressed where the specifications are now and what future developments will bring as well as look at different market segments that are adopting open specs. Participants learned how these industry efforts are moving the industry from custom-based solutions to commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products. He also included a brief introduction to HPI and AIS, and look at the HPI-to-AdvancedTCA Mapping Specification.

Tutorial T2C: Software for High-Availability Systems (sponsored by the Service Availability Forum)
Tuesday, October 17
1:30 – 5:00 p.m.

Organizer:

  • Jon Kenton, Service Availability Forum Marketing Work Group Chair

Instructors:

  • Asif Naseem, COO & CTO, GoAhead Software
  • Sayandeb Saha, Software Architect, Motorola Embedded Communications Computing

Intended Audience:
Application software developers, communications equipment designers, technology managers, business decision makers, Telco and enterprise end users, systems analysts and integrators, marketing and engineering managers, consultants, design specialists, and design service providers.

Course Description:
According to a recent survey, 83% of the telecom industry is implementing or will implement Service Availability Forum (SA Forum) specifications in their software.  Furthermore, 73% said they will include SA Forum specifications as requirements in their RFP’s.  So now is the time for telecom equipment designers to learn about these important specifications that will be central for profiling by the SCOPE Alliance (www.scope-alliance.org) and testing and certification efforts by the Communications Platforms Trade Association (www.cp-ta.org). This tutorial will provide first-hand information on how to implement SA Forum specifications.

The Hardware Platform Interface (HPI) provides an industry standard to monitor and control highly available telecommunications systems platforms, allowing designers to focus on their company's unique value-add. Using the Application Interface Specification (AIS), programmers can develop portable carrier-grade applications, reducing software complexity and shortening time to market.

This tutorial will provide an in-depth introduction to the HPI and the AIS. Attendees will:

  • Learn the basic features and capabilities of both HPI and AIS
  • Gain an understanding of how to implement and use the standard feature set

The increasing focus on software as a way to provide value-add and product differentiation is creating new opportunities, but is also producing challenges in determining a reasonable starting level for development. This tutorial will explore methods for maximizing the return on software development, particularly in the context of standards-based technologies such as AdvancedTCA. Attendees will be introduced to the concepts of the Service Availability Forum whose mission is to provide a standardized set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for High Availability operating environments. The emphasis will be on approaches to creating highly-available systems and mechanisms for migrating applications to the new environment. There is also a focus on applying software platform technology to the 5-NINEs requirements of the telecommunications, and related, industries, while implementing flexible, easily managed systems.

Keynote Speakers
Additionally, Tim Kober, SA Forum president, will be speaking on Wednesday, Oct 18 from 10:30 – 11:15 am on “Communications Platforms for the Future.”  John Fryer, SA Forum Member Relations Officer and Board Officer, will give a presentation from 11:15 – 12:00 titled, “Communications Servers for Next Generation Applications.”
