  • Steve Mills, SA Forum Technical Workgroup Contributor, GoAhead Software Systems Engineer
  • Zoltan Micskei, SA Forum Marketing Workgroup Contributor, Budapest University of Technology and Economics

SESSION DESCRIPTION
System integrators and application developers are demanding ways to differentiate, and the ability to design and build portable applications, and quickly and easily port such applications from one carrier-grade base platform to another is one key way they are gaining an edge. The Service Availability Forum (SA Forum) develops interface specifications that enable developers to build applications that are not locked in to a specific platform and can be easily re-used. This standardization of application ready platforms reduces time to market along with R&D cost and integration time.

During the SA Forum Education Seminar, attendees will learn about SA Forum specifications for platform management implementations and application development, using AdvancedTCA examples, and a "starship demo" will tie it all together.

HIGH-LEVEL AGENDA

INTRODUCTION
In this section, presenters will ensure a base-level understanding of the SA Forum, its objectives as well as provide a high-level overview of the architecture of a carrier-grade base platform. This section will also provide attendees with a brief overview of both the Hardware Platform Interface (HPI), as well as the Application Interface Specification (AIS). Finally, attendees will gain an understanding of how SA Forum specifications are enabling network equipment providers and other developers of mission-critical systems to meet deployment schedules and reduce cost and risk.

PLATFORM MANAGEMENT
Here we will explore how HPI has become a commercial success. We will also discuss SA Forum's enhanced set of specifications focused on extending platform management capabilities and the interaction between hardware events and software entities using the Platform Management Service (PLM). This effort to bridge HPI and AIS enables greater service availability, application portability and platform usability. In addition, this session will also cover HPI to ATCA mapping.

APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT
In this section, the SA Forum uses a live demonstration to showcase AIS, the specification aimed at ensuring application portability/re-use by standardizing how applications interact with the service availability middleware. Attendees will gain an understanding of an architecture utilizing AIS, as well as explore key services such as the Availability Management Framework, the Information Model Management Service, Cluster Membership, Checkpoint, Event, Message and more.

WRAP-UP
In this final portion of the presentation, SA Forum members will share with you the roadmap for future SA Forum specification development. We will also walk you through how to get more information on the Forum (i.e. specifications, education, membership, upcoming events, etc.).
