The Software Management Framework: Basic Concepts Explained As network capacity continues to grow and evolve, maintaining continuous service availability is critical. This latest whitepaper outlines how the SA Forum Software Management Framework (SMF) addresses uninterrupted service availability when systems require some type of upgrade, be it deploying bug fixes and security patches or enhancing and deploying new services.
The whitepaper presents the concepts introduced by the SMF through an example upgrade campaign definition. This example is largely based on the open source Portable Highly Available Sensors (PHASE) application. After a brief overview of the SMF, the paper introduces the configuration of this PHASE application deployment, which needs to be upgraded. It then describes the new software, which is delivered to the system and makes the upgrade desirable and presents an upgrade scenario, exploring how it may take place and how different options are reflected in the upgrade campaign specification. The paper concludes by elaborating on the error handling during upgrades, describing the parts that need to be included in an upgrade campaign specification and those that are the responsibility of an SMF implementation.
